REVIVING STEAM:
THE LEGACY OF THE ALBERNI PACIFIC RAILWAY

The Alberni Pacific Railway (APR), founded in 1984 in Port Alberni, British Columbia, is a heritage railway operated by the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society, a non-profit dedicated to preserving and operating vintage industrial equipment.

Originally serving the lumber export industry, APR became a historical and educational attraction showcasing the region’s logging and railway heritage. The railway’s main locomotive, the No. 7 Baldwin 2-8-2ST steam engine (built in 1929), replaced the earlier “Two-Spot” locomotive in 1996. From 2001 to 2018, it transported passengers on a six-mile route to the McLean Mill National Historic Site.
